Description:

I. Taiwan has announced over 2,800 species of terrestrial protected wild animals (including domestic and international species) according to the Wildlife Conservation Act. These include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish among vertebrates; insects and crustaceans among arthropods; and bivalves and gastropods among mollusks. Government agencies (organizations), schools, etc., may raise or possess these protected wild animals due to operational needs. However, according to Article 31, Paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Wildlife Conservation Act, they must be registered with the competent authority of the municipality or county (city) where they are raised, and an appropriate environment must be provided to maintain animal welfare in order to legally raise or possess them.

II. Registration is not required in the following situations:
(I) Those who have applied for and obtained approval for the research and utilization of protected wild animals in accordance with Article 18 of the Wildlife Conservation Act, and release them immediately after research or release them after short-term research.
(II) Those who are temporarily housed for reasons such as wildlife rescue and may be released or transferred to other units for long-term care.
III. According to Article 31, Paragraph 3 of the Wildlife Conservation Act, protected wild animals shall not be bred without the approval of the competent authority for educational or academic research purposes.
